DR. JASON GRIFFITH: Intrauterine insemination is a procedure used to assist couples with several different diagnoses involving infertility. Basically it is a process of giving the sperm a head start or by putting them closer to the ovulated egg. It can be used either alone or in combination with fertility therapies, such as oral medications or injectibles.
The procedure basically entails the male partner in the couple by giving a semen sample. That semen sample is then prepared for the intrauterine insemination. The female partner in the couple then comes in and in a procedure much similar to a pap smear, a small catheter about the size of an uncooked spaghetti strand is placed through the cervix into the uterus. The sample is then placed. The female partner of the couple is asked to wait about 15 minutes afterwards, and then she’s free to go about her normal activities throughout the day.
